Anambra 2021: For Our Tomorrow To Begin Today, Let’s Keep Age Aside

By Christian Aburime

One of the greatest battles in life is to be yourself in a world that consistently tries to make you somebody else.

The greatest asset you can equally have in life is the courage to be different from others.

Making a difference in life on the level of personal competence and performance has nothing to do with age.

Life is largely about personal dynamism, which is your ability to possess a warm disposition and positive attitude that is detached from the age one has attained in life

The act of dishonesty, laziness and being untrustworthy is not a function of age, but of one’s mentality.

This is evidently true when you consider, more often than not, that the thoughts you generate become your words, your words become your actions, your actions become your character. And your character ultimately becomes a reflection of your mentality or mental being

In the Bible, God in His infinite wisdom called Abraham out from his village in Haran with the promise to make him the father of many nations.

The Bible recorded that Abraham was 75 years old when he received this divine call. This means age was essentially not a factor to the creator!

On April 30, 1789, George Washington took the oath of office as the first President of the United States. He was 57 years.

Since 1789, the United States has had 44 different men as Presidents. The average age of these men as at the time they took office the first time was approximately put at 56 years and 146 days

Donald Trump is currently 74 years old, while his Democrat counterpart, Joe Biden would be 78 years at the time of his inauguration, should he win the 2020 US presidential election in November.

These are two great men who are jostling for the most powerful position in the world; and both are still mentally and physically sound with the right presence of mind to lead the rest of the world.

On the legislative side, the average age of politicians serving in the US Congress is continuously going up. The average age of the 115th Congress of the United States of America was said to be around 57.8 years while the average age of the Senators serving was put at 61.8 years old

The statistics above have shown that competence and performance are absolutely not determined by age but by one’s mental and emotional well being.

Moreover, the way people perceive you is the way they will receive you now and in the future not necessarily on the basis of age. If you have consistently shown positive attributes, people will record it in their ‘perceptual mind’. Anytime your name is mentioned, they conjure up these good attributes

Leadership irrespective of age should be measured by a leader’s positive attributes, ideological beliefs and personal convictions driven by courage.

Even if you have the wisdom of king Solomon, the intelligence of Albert Einstein or the skills of Diego Maradona or Lionel Messi, if you do not bring your positive attributes to bear or you do not act on your ideological beliefs and personal convictions, all your wisdom, knowledge or skill will amount to nothing irrespective of your age

Fear, which is the absence of courage is also of the greatest causes of failure in the history of mankind and not the age one has attained. Fear has the unpalatable effect of paralyzing or preventing leaders without courage or guts from taking action or doing something meaningful.

Fear is an oppressor and enemy number one when it comes to competence and performance. The absence of fear becomes the quality of being tough-minded which is the ability of the individual to be in the eyes of the storm, take tough decisions and remain unshaken

Laziness is another terrible attitude that affects competence and performance of a leader and not the age he has attained.

Laziness is literally a disease that affects the greater number of the human family. Usually, the human body pulls away from anything that will produce pains and discomfort.

This is because the human brain produces chemical changes that magnify pains which tries to protect us from those pains.

Our brain wants us to be at ease. It hinders our minds from getting the required motivation that can make us do those exploits that may likely cause us discomfort. Laziness can successfully live inside of a man, no matter his age, and it will make him to continuously reap failure and disappointments in abundance

Great leaders who build countries like the United States of America, Great Britain, France, Japan, China and recently Singapore, and the City of Dubai, invariably changed the course of world history, by impacting positively in the lives of their citizens and country.

These leaders collectively have one thing in common: the timeless attributes discussed above as their guiding principles and not on the basis of their age.

Age is just a number. A man who is over 60 years old and another that is 40 years can both perform in a position of leadership if their full mental and emotional well being are intact and not the basis of their age.

Conversely, age is therefore not a factor in competence and performance measurement in any leadership assessment.

For mankind to make progress, Let’s keep age aside so that our tomorrow can begin today!
