The Anambra State House of Assembly has tasked the chairman Anambra State Internal Revenue Service to adopt more proactive strategies to ensure that citizens pay their taxes and also embark on aggressive campaigns to stem the tide of tax evasion and tax avoidance in the state.

The issue was brought to the fore yesterday, following a motion sponsored by the Deputy Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Paschal Agbodike and a few others.

The motion was a call of urgent public importance to the state governor Chief Willie Obiano to direct the Chairman of the state internal revenue service to embark on a continuous sensitisation programme to ensure prompt payment of taxes and levies by the citizenry as well as take proactive measures to forestall tax evasion and tax avoidance.

Part of the motion reads, “Whereas the ugly practice of tax evasion and tax avoidance by most tax payers in Anambra state is not only fraudulent but also constantly depletes the internally generated revenue of the state, which in turn adversely affects the provision of adequate basic social infrastructure by the state for its indigenes and residents alike.

“Whereas embarking on a continuous massive sensitisation programme by the Anambra State Internal Revenue Service to ensure prompt payment of taxes and shun tax evasion and tax avoidance will go a long way to achieve the desired increase and growth in the state internally generated revenue.”

The state assembly therefore resolved that there was a dire need for the governor to prevail on the management of the Internal Revenue Service to address issues of tax evasion and tax avoidance with a view to boost the state revenue base.
