The Anambra State Chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress has commended president Muhammadu Buhari for his assent to the N30,000.00 new national minimum wage.
The NLC gave the commendation on Monday in Awka while speaking with our correspondent.
Chairman of the state chapter, Comrade Jerry Nnubia, said NLC thanked the president for assenting to the minimum wage bill even though he said it was a struggle that started since 2016. He expressed profound gratitude to President Buhari for his decision to meet the yearnings of Nigerian workers.
Although the NLC chairman observed that considering the economic situation in the country, the new national minimum wage may not be enough to address the numerous needs of the workers, he took cognisance of the fact that by signing the new national minimum wage, the federal government has set the ball rolling and that in no distant time the minimum wage may also be reviewed upwards.
He explained that the president has acted like a father who is mindful of the sufferings of Nigerian workers, adding that his action is commendable.
Nnubia also disclosed that workers were delighted in Anambra because, according to him, the state governor Chief Willie Obiano had promised workers that as soon as the minimum wage was signed into law, that he would be the first governor in the country to pay the new minimum wage.
The state NLC boss therefore maintained that workers would take the governor by his words even as he was emphatic that the governor does not renege on his promises stressing that it may form part of the governor’s May Day package for Anambra workers.
He described Chief Willie Obiano as a labour-friendly governor and that the organised labour has equally enjoyed a cordial working relationship with him, pointing out that it was not surprising that the governor has made a firm promise to be amongst the first governors to implement the new national minimum wage.
