Anambra Records First Covid-19 Death

Raymond Ozoji, Awka

Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra state has announced the demise of a 66-year-old man whose death occurred as a result of not reporting his ill-health on time to medical experts for prompt diagnosis and treatment.

Obiano explained that the deceased case was reported to the hospital late and by the time the result of the test conducted on him came back positive for Covid-19 a day after, he had passed on. The governor said there was a possibility that the case could have been managed very well, if the medical team on Covid-19 had been alerted early enough.

The governor who made the announcement in a state-wide broadcast on Covid-19 update yesterday, stated that in spite of the death recorded, there was no need for the citizenry to panic because government was on top of the situation.

He said, “Out of the many tests we have conducted so far, we have recorded nine positive covid-19 cases. Four of these cases are currently in our protective care centres. Three of the cases have been discharged and only one case has passed on.”

Obiano equally informed the citizens that government has put together a 428-bed protective care centre to absorb covid-19 cases as well as nurse them back to good health.

According to him, “We have made elaborate arrangements to fight this pandemic. We have fumigated all the 63 markets in Anambra state and distributed palliative materials to segments of our society. We have also continued to advocate the strict adherence to Covid-19 protocols which includes heavy use of nose masks, frequent washing of hands, regular use of hand sanitizers and maintenance of social distancing.”

The governor emphasized that it was of paramount importance to note that the rise in covid-19 cases in Anambra state was due to the aggressive search mounted by the state covid-19 taskforce headed by him. He said that following the success of the taskforce at the state level, government decided to domesticate the taskforce at the ward and community levels for a more aggressive campaign against coronavirus pandemic.

Apart from the foregoing, Governor Obiano also disclosed the establishment of a Covid-19 Medication Team. The team, according to him, comprised seasoned medical practitioners and public health officers who will deliberate and decide the best medical approaches to adopt on a case-by-case basis even as he cautioned health care workers on inhumane attitudes against covid-19 patients while urging them to uphold their professional oaths in the discharge of their duties.

He however advised hospitals in Anambra state to create an isolation room where any patient whose sample has been taken for covid-19 testing can be kept while the result is being awaited.

“If a patient who is suspected of covid-19 is placed in an isolation ward, it reduces the pressure we have to contend with in the volume of contract-tracing that arises from allowing a suspected patient roam freely. We expect all hospitals in Anambra state to comply with this directive with immediate effect,” Obiano emphasized.
