It’s a new dawn for football activities in Anambra state as new state executives emerged at the weekend from what may be described as a peaceful election at the Catholic Retreat Centre Okpuno Awka, Awka-South local government area of Anambra state.
Engr. Victor Aniekwena, who was unanimously elected as the Vice-Chairman Anambra State Football Association said his advent would cause a dramatic turn in the way football games were being handled across the state
Aniekwena assured football lovers that his tenure would get a lot of youths out of the streets and that this time, they would harness more talents from the grassroots with a view to developing local football tournaments.
He also said that the stadia across the state would be put to effective use as the aim was to revitalize football activities in Anambra state.
The Anambra State Football Association helmsman assured that the right personnel would be commissioned to manage the stadia in the state, noting that Onitsha-North, Onitsha-South, Awka and some other cities have football pitches but the right people according to him, would ensure that they are functional and they would also scout for sponsorships and government interventions to keep football alive in the state.
On his part, Reverend Father Obinna Dike who was the Chairman of the Anambra State Football Association Electoral Committee 2020, said the elections for the state and local councils’ executives were conducted in the most open and transparent manner before the watchful eyes of the media and other observers.
Dike also explained that the elections have produced the structures upon which Anambra State Football would be anchored and that henceforth, the overall objective would be to make football better in the state.
He said the way forward was to get good-minded people to develop sports especially football and that there was need also to eschew bitterness and attacks on individuals because of positions but ultimately introduce the spirit of sportsmanship and symbiotic relationship with the government through the sports ministry.
