Senator Annie Okonkwo who represented Anambra-central senatorial zone at the national assembly has accused the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) for Idemili-North and South federal constituency in the February 16th national assembly election of abducting supporters of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) as well as destroying campaign posters and billboards belonging to his son Uche Annie Okonkwo who is the SDP candidate for Idemili-North and South federal constituency.
The former senator who revealed this to newsmen at Finotel hotel Awka during a crucial meeting with political leaders in Awka-South at the weekend, said the APGA candidate was being threatened by his son’s overwhelming popularity and acceptance in Idemili-North and South.
He said his goodwill and proven track records of job creation as well as a host of other community development projects in the area had paved the way for the actualisation of his son’s aspiration to represent Idemili-North and South at the Green Chambers.
Okonkwo however expressed deep concern at the decision of an aspiring representative to resort to what he mentioned as cultism and hooliganism to win an election he already lost.
He said his son would win Idemili-North and South federal constituency elections stressing that none of his co-contestants would withstand his fame in the area.
He also disclosed that the police were currently handling the matter and neither his son nor any supporter of the SDP would launch a reprisal instead they would employ legitimate means to seek redress.
When contacted to ascertain the veracity of the claims made by the father of the SDP candidate, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Anambra state command of the Nigeria police SP Haruna Mohammed said the matter was a case of alleged abduction and malicious damage of election posters, billboards and other campaign materials pasted in the area bearing the image of the SDP candidate for Idemili-North and South Uche Annie Okonkwo.
The PPRO said the case was still under investigation and the police must get to the root of the matter to be able to make an informed decision on the issue.
