The Conference of Spokespersons of the All Progressives Congress Nationwide has congratulated the new governor of Imo state, Sen. Hope Uzodimma, on his victory at the Supreme Court.
The felicitations were contained in a press statement made available to journalists in Awka on Sunday by the chairman of the group and spokesman of the APC in Anambra state, Mr. Okelo Madukife.
The statement reads, “The recovery of the mandate due to APC in the March 2019 governorship election is heart-warming and has enriched the conduct of elections in Nigeria, while developing our jurisprudence further.
“We commend the courage and prudence of the Supreme Court, whose duty is to dispense justice for rightly upholding the minority judgement of the Court of Appeal in this matter; aligning with the position of the Electoral Act that ‘ Forms EC 8A’, results accepted and declared at polling units, and signed by party agents, cannot be voided at collation level.
“Conference of APC State Publicity Secretaries (CAPS) rejoices with the new Governor of Imo State, His Excellency Hope Uzodimma (Onwa), the new government under formation and the people of Imo State for standing up for democracy when it was most needed.
“If anything, the celebrations in the South East state since the Supreme Court verdict became public signposts that the critical mass in Imo State silently and peacefully followed the struggle to restore the peoples will.
“The framers of our constitution have bequeathed us a wise condition of a prospective governor attaining the required spread by scoring 25 percent of votes cast in two-thirds of the local governments in that state.
“We are glad that a candidate who attained 25 percent of votes in less than 18 out of Imo State’s 27 LGAs, and yet found himself on the governorship seat by the imperfection of our growing democratic institutions was not allowed to create the wrong precedence.
“While sharing this moment of joy with our Imo State brethren, we urge belt-tightening and proper scrutiny of the circumstances under which one who did not satisfy the constitutional requirements for becoming a governor was declared governor, sworn in and his election upheld by a tribunal in the first place.
“We seize this moment to advise those who are supposed to be in opposition to the Central Government to oppose and not antagonise, by standing the truth on the head. With the order of the Supreme Court admitting wrongfully cancelled results in 388 polling units, the accreditation figures for those units, naturally gets added to the accreditation figures, which total must of necessarily change.
“Those trying to score a non-existent point out of accreditation figures, and who descend so low as to issue uninformed reactions, twisting a clear judgement, and try to discredit the same apex court that decided the governorship petitions in Zamfara and Rivers States, which others bore through in dignity, are challenged to sometimes pretend to be good losers for the common good.
“Going forward we look forward to the consolidation of the free education policy and the massive infrastructural development of Imo State recorded between 2011 and 2019, under the government of His Excellency Gov. Rocha’s Okorocha.
“We trust that the business of transition to this government shall be smooth and our great party shall return to its stable ways in that historical state.”
