Updated: Buhari On Sympathy Visit To Maiduguri, Booed By Residents

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday arrived in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, for a “sympathy visit” as a crowd of Borno residents booed him.

Mr Buhari’s spokesperson, Garba Shehu, announced the president’s arrival in Maiduguri in a Tweet on Wednesday afternoon.

“12:45pm. President Buhari, aboard the BBJ from Addis Ababa just landed in Maiduguri. He is paying a sympathy visit to the government and people of Borno following the recent horrific incident in which BH terrorists killed several travelers,” Mr Shehu wrote.

Though Buhari and his aides had repeatedly told Nigerians that Boko Haram was defeated, the terrorists killed 30 and abducted several women and children in a raid last Sunday.

The attack reportedly targeted the village of Auno on a key highway, linking Maiduguri.

At least 18 vehicles comprising trailers, buses, and cars were said to have been burnt by the insurgents, who laid siege to their village about 9.50 pm on Sunday.

In viral videos on Twitter, residents, including children, could be seen expressing their disapproval as the President’s convoy drove past.

They could be heard chanting, “Bama yi! Bama so! (We don’t want! We are not doing!)”

One user, Mansur Ahmed, said, “Kai, not so good for Mr Integrity @MBuhari. These people are not asking for too much, are they @NigeriaGov?”

Similarly, @SGezee, stated, “From this video here the power is really angry.”

Abubakar Mohammed also said, “We have to express our opinion because we want justice.”

Adamu Sadiq noted, “Our eyes are open. Now, this is a clear warning to the leaders (that) they should better take note.”

The PUNCH reports that Buhari has been known to be popular in Borno State.

In the last Presidential election, Buhari had his widest margin of victory in Borno State, where he polled 836,496 votes out of 955,205 votes that were cast, which constitutes a margin of over 85 per cent.

His closest rival, Atiku Abubakar, of the Peoples Democratic Party scored 71,788 votes.

The president was accompanied by the defence minister, the National Security Adviser, the governors of Imo and Cross River states, Hope Uzodimma and Ben Ayade, and other federal government officials.

Premium Times reported that Mr. Buhari was immediately driven into Maiduguri town amidst tight security mounted by the army and the police.

The president also visited the palace of the Shehu of Borno, Abubakar Elkanemi.
