Breeding Local Cows (Efi Igbo) Yields More Money, Says NULGE Chairman

It has been observed that local cows (Efi  Igbo) yields more money as you spend less on their food. There are also grasses in bushes to feed them and one only spends a little on veterinary services to keep them healthy.

Mr Peter Omatali, Chairman, Ayamelum Local Government chapter of the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), made the observation at the LG Secretariat, Anaku.

He commended Anambra State Government for embarking on breeding of local variety of Igbo cows (Efi Igbo) in the state.

“If government offers loan facilities of about N500, 000 and above to some determined unemployed youths, they will be capable of expanding on the business in shorter period of time.

“Anyone who starts off with male species from the north cow and five female Igbo cows will make it fast, and the business will flourish over the next two years.

“It is government that will determine if local cows (Efi Igbo) will expand in the state to drive the other species out of the markets; this can put an end to herdsmen/farmers clashes in the state,’’ he added.

The NULGE boss pleaded with state government to engage many unemployed youths in the business by providing them facilities that will enable them to start local cow rearing.

Omatali noted that rearing of local cows could yield more in returns to those that could engage in the business.

According to him, local cows are costlier than those bred in the north but tastes better than the species from the north.

“Local cow (Efi Igbo) rearing business was in vogue in the past, until it went into extinction because people found out that it is costlier to rear,’’ he said.

Omatali urged the youths to engage in the business because it does not cost so much to start off.
