The budget bilateral discussions between the Anambra State House of Assembly Committee on Tertiary Education and the delegation from Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University at the state assembly complex Awka reveals that the state-owned university is in dire need of government help and assistance especially in the area of infrastructure.
This was the crux of the matter at the budget bilateral talks as the delegation from Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University defended its budget for the coming year.
The State Assembly Tertiary Education Committee chaired by the lawmaker representing Ogbaru One State Constituency Hon. Noble Igwe observed that the state-owned university required legislative support to enable it to surmount challenges confronting it.
The committee wondered why the university’s Pharmacy Department failed its accreditation and asked the university authority to work on its template to enable the legislature to assist in proferring lasting solutions to its problems.
The committee equally found out that the state-owned university lacked basic infrastructure especially as it is more pronounced in the Department of Architecture and Law.
Also on the issue of course accreditation, the committee discovered that the institution needed money for it to carry out regular accreditation of courses in the university.
Moreso, the committee discovered from the representatives of the institution that the university has had over 40 approvals without releases.
The Tertiary Education Committee therefore appealed passionately to the state government to help and assist the institution to tackle its problems, adding that the committee will visit the university for a thorough oversight function before the end of the year.
Leader of the delegation and a Professor of Law who didn’t mention his name to the press, said he has no authorization from the vice chancellor of the university to speak to journalists about the institution when asked to respond to some of the issues raised during the budget defense.
