Covid-19: PDP Chieftain Challenges Obiano To Provide Test Kits

Raymond Ozoji, Awka

Few days to the expiration period of Governor Willie Obiano’s self-quarantine after his contact with Bauchi state governor in the last National Executive Council meeting in Abuja, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra state, Mr. Emeka Igwe has challenged the governor to provide covid19 test kits to ascertain citizens’ status.

Igwe said it was not enough to claim that Anambra state has no confirmed coronavirus case because according to him, citizens were not tested to ascertain the veracity of the claim.

The PDP Chieftain who spoke with our correspondent in an exclusive interview noted that it was only in the southeast that there are no test centres for covid19 but Lagos, Ogun, Edo and Kaduna states all have test centres where status could be confirmed.

Igwe was of the opinion that the governor could afford the exorbitant cost of the coronavirus test but stressed that the poor masses cannot, but the provision of the test kits at strategic locations would go a long way to enable people to go for test to reduce spread of the viral infection.

The former House of Assembly candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the last general election said, “The problem there is that people are not being tested. I don’t think Anambra has a test centre. I don’t even think if they have test kits.

“If somebody has it and he stays at home, he will give it to his own family. I don’t think they are doing the right thing.”

He said it was a good decision for the governor to quarantine himself after his contact with the Bauchi state governor but the bone of contention according to him, is how many people did the governor interact with shortly after the NEC meeting?

Igwe further expressed worry that because there were no testing centres in the state, one would not be able to ascertain those that were actually infected with the coronavirus.

He said that although some state governors claimed that there were no established cases of coronavirus in their states but according to him, the virus may have found its way into other states judging from the way it spreads, stressing that coronavirus is in every state.

He also argued that there cannot be a confirmed case of Covid19 in Anambra because there were no testing machines to identify carriers of the virus.

Igwe therefore advised state governors to pull resources together and set up test centres in their respective states and encourage people to go for covid19 test as veritable means of containing the pandemic.

According to him, “If you say you don’t have any case, you are telling yourself a lie because the virus spreads so fast,” adding that quarantine centres are welcome development for those confirmed to be carriers but the problem is that there are no test kits to confirm cases and to that extent, the quarantine facilities would be isolated and deserted.

He said the Anambra State Government was not doing enough to contain coronavirus pandemic; that restricting movements and shutdown commercial activities was not the solution to the situation but emphasized that government should invest in test kits and make them available for citizens to access and get tested to ascertain their covid19 status, stressing that it was only through test that coronavirus cases can be confirmed not by words of mouth.
