COVID-19: Unizik VC Not A Suspect

Raymond Ozoji, Awka

The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka Anambra state has issued a disclaimer on a purported story making the rounds that the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Charles Okechukwu Esimone has tested positive for coronavirus.

The disclaimer signed and issued to newsmen in Awka yesterday by the acting Public Relations Officer of the institution Chika Gladys Ene, made it categorically clear that the university head is sound, hale and hearty and has not exhibited any symptoms of ill-health let alone the deadly covid19.

The disclaimer further disclosed that inasmuch as the university authority wouldn’t want to be involved in any form of war with peddlers of such defamatory story, it is also not impertinent to state that the Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka has not travelled out of the country in the last 4 months and has equally not come in contact with carriers of Covid19 virus.

The disclaimer reads in parts, “The Vice Chancellor has not travelled out of the country in the past four months. The vice chancellor has not had contact with anyone who have tested positive for covid19 in Nigeria.

“The Vice Chancellor partook in the recent convocation ceremonies of the university in sound health. The Vice Chancellor has been discharging his duties in sound health since this year till date.

“The university’s Chinese teachers who travelled home last December were advised to remain in their country pending the containment of the Covid-19 spread; they have not returned to Nigeria ever since. Our Confucius Institute has equally suspended teaching since February 2020.”

“Members of the public should dismiss those stories as they were but a calculated attempt to malign the image and reputation of the Vice Chancellor and that of the university.”
