…says the church, govt and private sector should adopt school programme to provide equal opportunity to poor children
The former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, has admonished all to patronise made in Nigeria goods.
He said that Anambra rice, Efi Igbo (Igbo cow) and locally bred chickens were more delicious compared to the foreign breed.
Prof. Soludo made the plea during an interactive session with the Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese.
The event was organised by the Diocesan Laity Council in Achina, Aguata Local Government Area.
The former CBN boss further urged Ndi Anambra to get into animal husbandry to boost the local economy, enjoining people to come back to base as it was the only thing that would make the state unique.
He also called on the Church, Government and private sector to adopt a school programme to provide equal opportunity to children of the poor in the society.
Soludo, a renowned Economist, observed that the children of the poorest of the poor were denied the opportunity of attending mission schools after contributing levies to support the building of such schools by their parents.
He advocated that catchment areas, where a school was domiciled should benefit from special scholarship awards, so as to enable the poor children from such localities to have a sense of belonging, even when it would involve the wealthy paying their school fees.
Soludo noted that Catholic Church was the largest non-governmental organisation with highest investments in health and education, saying that government and the Church should strengthen the schools handed to missions.
“The church is doing quite a great deal in that area but will need to partner with the wealthy or look for sponsors to raise the standard of living.
“When you give a child good education and health facilities, you have empowered such a child.’’
Soludo also said that the Church, government and individuals must partner to assist the youths by organising skills acquisition programmes to the grassroots.
“A youth with a minimum of one skill will help to empower our youths, making them to be usefully engaged at all times thereby curbing immoralities.’’
