Eguavoen Sets Sights On AFCON 2025: ‘Every Game Is Played To Win

As the Super Eagles prepare to face Benin Republic and Rwanda in the next round of qualifiers for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on the 14th and 18th respectively, head coach Augustine Eguavoen is focused on ensuring his team is ready for success.

In an exclusive interview with SportsBoom.com, Eguavoen shared his thoughts on the team’s preparations, player form, and his expectations for these crucial matches.

Eguavoen on Benin Republic Rematch
Reflecting on the upcoming second leg against Benin Republic, Eguavoen emphasized the importance of the match not only as a chance to secure qualification but as an opportunity to reaffirm Nigeria’s dominance in African football.

“We play every game to win. Nigeria is a powerhouse in African football, and we approach each match with the mentality of champions,” Eguavoen said.

“The defeat in the first leg was disappointing, but it’s behind us now. This match is not just about revenge; it’s about reminding ourselves and our fans of the strength of the Super Eagles.”

Players in Top Form Thanks to Club Seasons
Eguavoen expressed confidence in the sharpness of his players, many of whom are in top form thanks to their ongoing club seasons.

“Most of our players are actively competing in their leagues, which is a huge advantage,” he noted. “They’re in great shape, physically and mentally, which is exactly what we need for these qualifiers.

“The sharpness, energy, and hunger I’m seeing are very encouraging. The players understand the mission, and they’re ready to give their best.”

Commitment to Country: Early Arrivals Fuel Unity
The coach also praised the early arrival of the majority of the squad, which has allowed for smoother preparation and team cohesion ahead of the matches.

“It’s impressive to see most of the players arriving early in camp. Their commitment to the national team is commendable, and it shows the unity and dedication we have,” Eguavoen said.

“Everyone knows the importance of these games, and they’ve come prepared to give their all for Nigeria.

“The only exception was Sadiq Umar, who joined us today from Real Sociedad, but we’re glad to have him back and ready.”

Approach to Rwanda Clash
On the Super Eagles’ approach to the game against Rwanda, Eguavoen reiterated the importance of focus and respect for the opponent, even if the team had already qualified to the Afcon finals before then.

“Every match is a challenge, and we’re preparing for Rwanda just as we are for Benin. The goal is clear; qualification to the AFCON finals,” he stated.  “We’re not taking anything for granted. It’s essential that we remain disciplined, play as a unit, and stay hungry for victory.”

As the Super Eagles continue their training sessions, Eguavoen remains optimistic about their chances in the upcoming qualifiers.  With a talented roster, a determined mindset, and a passionate fan base behind them, Nigeria is poised to make a statement on the road to AFCON 2025.
