… harps on safety of school buses
Raymond Ozoji, Awka
The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has cautioned fleet operators and road users in Anambra to avoid using expired tyres popularly known as ‘Tokunbo’ tyres in local parlance.
Sector commander of the commission in Anambra state Mr. Sunday Michael Ajayi gave the caution at the command headquarters Awka during its quarterly meeting with stakeholders in the transport sector on Wednesday.
He said Tokunbo tyres were dangerous and inimical to road users especially as the dry season was fast approaching.
Ajayi therefore admonished fleet operators and other road users to insist on knowing the manufacturing dates of tyres at the point of purchase to avoid incidents and misfortunes of expired tyres.
Apart from ascertaining the manufacturing dates of tyres, the sector commander equally suggested that vehicle owners should ascertain the PSI of their vehicle tyres to avoid adding air pressure into their tyres beyond the minimum air pressure specified by the manufacturer as PSI varies from manufacturer to manufacturer
Ajayi also said the role of safety managers could not be over-stressed as they were supposed to ensure the safety and maintenance of vehicles to ensure they were in perfect condition.
He said the meeting was significant in the sense that school bus operators were invited because of the school bus operators’ scheme. The FRSC Anambra boss noted that the scheme was supposed to observe minimum safety operational standards for vehicles conveying school children to school.
According to him, the commission will in no distant time roll out action and enforcement on school buses so that operators will confirm to minimum standards set for school buses.
