The Federal Road Safety Commission has said that it will not spare the masquerader that allegedly assaulted one of her officials at Nkwo roundabout Umunze in Orumba-South local government area of Anambra state on 15th November this year.
The commission said that the errant masquerader would be prosecuted for molesting an official on duty to serve as deterrent to other masqueraders encroaching on the roads and causing public nuisance.
Disclosing this to our correspondent at the command headquarters Awka at the weekend, the sector commander in Anambra state Mr Andrew Ayodele Kumapayi said masqueraders had been warned to veer off the roads as well as refrain from causing obstructions especially as the Yuletide festivities begin.
Kumapayi who narrated the ordeal of the FRSC official molested by the said masquerader, noted that such afflictions defeated the purpose for which masqueraders served; stressing that masquerade displays were supposed to be for excitements and not to maltreat or humiliate members of the public.
According to him, “The official was controlling traffic at Nkwo roundabout Umunze and saw the masquerader attacking people there. So the official went there and asked them to leave and they left. But after a while the masquerader came back and flogged the official and warned the official not to say anything or else it would give the official more strokes of the cane.”
The sector commander was emphatic that the commission would unmask the masquerader and bring it to face the full weight of the law because his action negated public order.
When contacted to ascertain whether such incident really occurred in the area, the council chairman of Orumba-South local government area of Anambra state Barr. Raymond Onyegu said it was true but the matter was being resolved amicably.
