The Special Adviser to Governor Willie Obiano on Health Dr. Simeon Beluonwu Onyemaechi says Anambra state is the only state in the southeast region of Nigeria with a functional health insurance scheme.
Onyemaechi who made the disclosure in Awka during an exclusive interview with our correspondent, responded to an allegation levelled against the state government where a certain organisation called Igbos for a Progressive Nigeria (IPAN) stated that Anambra has a failed healthcare system.
Onyemaechi who doubles as the Executive Secretary of the Anambra State Health Insurance Agency (ASHIA), said it was fallacious and fictitious for IPAN to hold such malicious opinion about the healthcare system in Anambra under Governor Willie Obiano because health according to him, has received a great boost especially with the introduction of the health insurance scheme.
It would be recalled that IPAN at a press conference in Awka prior to the governorship election, told journalists that it conducted a statewide investigative tour of health facilities across the state and concluded that there were no functional primary healthcare centres; that hospitals in the state were ill-equipped and poorly staffed.
IPAN had said that the health sector was a woeful failure because of its findings in the course of its investigations and that urgent steps should be taken to guarantee quality medical services for the citizenry.
But on the contrary, Onyemaechi also accused IPAN of being economical with the truth because other states according to him were coming to Anambra state for help on how to revamp their health sector.
The governor’s aide noted that in the last count, 14 different states have come to Anambra state to undertake study tour on how to implement health insurance in their respective states, adding that Anambra has gone far ahead to refurbish about 63 primary healthcare facilities and armed the facilities with medical personnel and materials needed to make them adequately functional.
He said the introduction of Keke ambulances and a host of others have taken healthcare delivery to the doorsteps of the rural populace; stressing that posterity will be fair to Governor Willie Obiano for all the innovations and initiatives he introduced under his watch.
As at the time of conducting the interview with him, Onyemaechi revealed that enrollees of the Anambra State Health Insurance Scheme were over 150,000 and that government was determined to give the people universal health coverage.
Onyemaechi said, “We have had over 100,000 outpatient attendance. We have had over 3000 surgeries. We have gone beyond medical to surgical operations in ASHIA. We have also increased our capitation from N450.00 per enrollee per month to N500.00 per enrollee per month to maintain quality service delivery from our healthcare providers.
“If our aim is to provide healthcare services that is of good quality and affordable to every resident of Anambra state, then whatever we need to do to get the quality of services to remain top-notch, then there is no cost that is too much for us to bear to do that.”
