Man Bags Jail Term For Assault On FRSC Official In Anambra

Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission Anambra state command, Mr. Sunday Michael Ajayi, has said that nobody has the right to raise fist at any road safety official on duty as they are not masquerades but on duty to enforce the law and ensure compliance.

Ajayi who stated this at the command headquarters Awka on Wednesday, said one Chika Nwasa was recently convicted for assaulting a road safety marshal on duty in Onitsha.

According to him, the offender was arraigned before His Worship George Nwabachil Esq  during a mobile court session held at RS5.31, Onitsha unit command for taking the safety marshal to the NIWA motor park Bridge Head Onitsha where he was allegedly assaulted by some unidentified persons currently at large.

Ajayi said the offender pleaded guilty to the three-count charge leveled against him and was consequently sentenced to one week imprisonment with a fine of N30,000 only noting that the court ordered that his sentence should run from the Onitsha Head Bridge Police station.

He also disclosed that for the month of June, the commission held about eight mobile court sessions and prosecuted over 205 persons for various traffic offences.

The sector commander noted that about 193 persons were convicted for numerous traffic offences while only two were discharged, stressing that the offenders were convicted for failure to install speed limiter device in their vehicles, tyre violation, sign violation and a host of others. He posited that the commission was working assiduously to reduce carnage on the highways as well as assist the motoring public through education and enlightenment on driving to stay alive.
