The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer New Idea Construction Company, Igwe Sir Ben Emeka, Oke-ebo 2nd of Umueri community in Anambra-east local government area of Anambra state, has been honoured with an award for quality road construction in Nigeria.
The honour was bestowed on him by the Association of Professional Bodies of Nigeria (APBN) Anambra state branch at its 2018 Independence Summit held at Beautiful Gate hotel Awka Anambra state.
The apparently elated monarch expressed profound gratitude to the association for the honour and recognition accorded his construction outfit for quality road construction in Anambra and beyond noting that the award could only spur the company to build more quality roads in the country that would stand the test of time.
He said the award was well-deserved because New Idea Construction Company built a lot of roads in Imo, Abia, Rivers and has presently built over 30 kilometers of roads in Anambra state, adding that his construction firm would continue to build quality roads in the country.
Although the traditional ruler berated shoddy road projects being executed by those he referred to as non-professionals, he stressed the dire need for road projects to be undertaken by professionals for quality delivery. He therefore pointed out that most of the roads built by quack contractors were failing in Anambra state but observed also that roads constructed by professionals stood the test of time. He noted that New Idea Construction Company operated with integrity, expertise and client’s interest at heart even as he observed that most road contractors do not have conscience in service delivery.
Igwe Emeka however suggested that government should call shoddy road contractors to order as he posited that some of the roads constructed in Anambra state already have potholes and required urgent maintenance.
The custodian of Umueri culture and tradition also sympathized with victims of a recent building collapse in Anambra state, emphasising that the remote causes of failed building projects in the country could be traced to the professional bodies who were supposed to be entrusted with building projects but the reverse was the case as he believed that people jettisoned civil engineering professionals and entrusted building projects to quacks in the sense that every individual claimed to be an engineer and builder.
According to him, building materials were problematic issues in the building process as people used poor quality materials in constructing buildings nowadays. He noted that the mixture of building materials were also responsible for incessant building collapse in the country.
To this end, the Chief Executive Officer New Idea Construction Company called on professional bodies in the country to ensure that only professionals handled building projects and equally desist from giving construction works to quack contractors as the engineering profession was not an all-comers affair.
He added that government should see reasons why they should engage only professionals in road constructions, building projects and a host of others and also abstain from contracting people who lack requisite knowledge and skills in the engineering profession. He encouraged the physical planning board to consider and scrutinise designs prior to construction; that the material testing laboratory should test soil and other building materials before the commencement of construction works to minimize the rate of building collapse in the country especially in Anambra state as people died whenever there was a building collapse.
