Governor Willie Obiano will on Friday 30th November, 2018 declare open the 2018 Nigerian Legion Day celebration of the Anambra state Council at the Prof Dora Akunyili Women’s Development Centre, Awka Anambra state.
Nigerian Legion is an organization of ex-servicemen.
Major Elder Nwankwo Joseph Ifeanyichukwu, JP, is the Anambra state Chairman, while Capt. Cyril Araonu, is the Chairman Strategy planning committee with Major Agbogu BE serving as the Secretary Strategy Planning Committee of the Nigerian Legion day celebration 2018.

The event will witness empowerment of widows of fallen heroes and honours of award of Excellence. It would be recalled that Anambra State Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Elder Major Joseph Ifeanyichukwu Nwankwo, on behalf of the Legion is appealing to Governor Obiano to approve a land anywhere in the state capital to enable them to start building the state secretariat of the Legion.
Nwankwo, literally wept over lack of an administrative office in the state lamenting that only Anambra state Legion has no Secretariat in the country.
While decrying lack of secretariat in the state for the legionnaires, Nwankwo called on Governor Willie Obiano to come to their rescue by providing a land where the state secretariat would be erected.
Elder Nwankwo regretted that non utilisation of the previous parcel of land allocated to the legion opposite the government house by Group Captain Garba Rufai (Retd) by the previous administrations of the legion made the state, the only state in the south east that exists without a secretariat.
He noted: “We need financial support from both the government and public spirited individuals. Anambra state is the only state in the whole country that has no secretariat ……we want the government to improve on their welfare package for us.
“We will also want the governor to provide an SUV car for the chairman or replace the Legion’s bus that is now in bad shape and as well, enlist us as one of the beneficiaries of the community project initiatives organised by his administration. We have given much to the world and nothing should be looked on as too big to be given back to us in return.”
Major Elder Nwankwo, flanked by his deputy, Major Christopher O Nwakanmuo, CNC and treasurer, Major Godwin Malife (CNC), said about Two Hundred (200) widows of their fallen heroes from Anambra state would be empowered by the state chapter of the Nigerian legion to ameliorate their problems and take care of their immediate families.
The widows, he revealed, would be empowered with grinding and sewing machines, farming inputs/implements, consumables and financial empowerment among other items during this year’s Nigerian Legion Day.
He requested widows of retired fallen heroes in the state to come and register with them so that they can be included in the forthcoming Fallen Heroes widow’s empowerment by the state Legion.
The Anambra state Chairman of the Nigerian Legion however solicited for concerted effort and financial assistant from both the government and public spirited individuals to carry out the lofty project, which, he said, would be an annual ritual in the state.
