‘NYSC Camp Ready For Post COVID-19 Orientation Course In Anambra’

Raymond Ozoji, Awka

The Anambra State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps, Mr. Aremu Kehinde, has said that the camp is ready for the post COVID-19 orientation course for in-coming corps members.

He stated this during an interview with NewsProbe at the NYSC secretariat Nibo Awka-South local government area of Anambra state.

He said that as the gradual relaxation of the nationwide lockdown continued as well as the announcement of the re-opening of tertiary institutions and National Youth Service Corps Camps by the federal government, the camp in the state was prepared for habitation in line with the COVID-19 safety protocols as stipulated by the Presidential Taskforce and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control.

The state coordinator explained that the Southeast Director of the NYSC had inspected the camp in the state and certified it as ready to host in-coming corps members. He said wash-hand basins and sanitizing bays had been provided and that beds had been separated to guarantee two metres social distancing.

Kehinde also noted that power, water supply and other facilities had received great boost in the camp and that the camp had been fumigated and decontaminated to ensure that people are safe while they undergo their orientation programme.

He further stated that care centres were also created in the camp and that there would be a re-engineering process in which corps members would be made to operate in groups for camp officials to be able to track and monitor their health conditions.

According to him, “We are now working on the COVID-19 sample collection boot from our head office. This will help us take samples, if there are suspected cases. Again, the ultimate aim is that we want to do a re-orientation for the young people. We want them to get ready for national youth service and impart in them the culture of working with diverse people and to be part of the developmental ideals of the places where they will undergo their primary assignments.

“We want them to be exposed to skill acquisition and entrepreneurship. These are the things we teach at the orientation camp.”

The NYSC state coordinator also said that corps members help to fill the manpower gaps in the education and health sectors of the state. He said serving corps members increased teaching staff in secondary schools as well as complemented the efforts of medical personnel at the hospitals.

On the occasion of this year’s International Day for Suicide Prevention, the state coordinator opined that the National Youth Service Corps Scheme is a programme designed to give hope to young Nigerians as well as dissuade them from suicide mentalities.

He noted that through the NYSC Entrepreneurship Development Programme ( EDP), youths acquire skills and NYSC facilitates interest-free loans to enable them to become wealth creators and produce more entrepreneurs, stressing that no youth who passed through the NYSC scheme would nurse suicide ambition.
