Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra state is set to commission Awka Township Stadium in December this year.
Newly elected chairman of Awka-South Local Football Council, Mr. Chekwube Christian Ofili, who disclosed the information to journalists at the weekend in Awka, said there was rapid work in progress at the stadium.
Ofili explained that Governor Willie Obiano had promised that the Awka Township Stadium would be officially opened for football activities on 28th of December this year with a novelty match.
He said sporting events had witnessed dwindling fortunes in Awka-South local government but with the in-coming dispensation, he was convinced that Awka-South football would be taken to the next level.
Ofili said his work plan would commence immediately with December local championships between communities and that from next year, Awka-South Local Football League would take the centrestage.
He said plans were also underway to resurrect Headmasters’ Cup, Principals’ Cup and a host of other tournaments that have become moribund due to maladministration.
Apart from the foregoing, he mentioned that Inter-agency Football Competitions would be organized for security outfits in Awka-South local government area and that they would source for sponsors to ensure that all efforts made to resuscitate football in Awka-South were successful.
