Onitsha Electronics Traders Protest Imposition Of Caretaker Committee On Them

The Onitsha Market Electronics Dealers Association, Anambra State, has protested against imposition of caretaker committee on them by influential persons in the state.

Addressing the traders at the Godwin Achebe Stadium, Fegge, Onitsha, the President of the association, Mr Izuchukwu Okoye, said that preparations had been concluded to conduct an election, but that he was surprised to receive a call postponing the election indefinitely.

Mr Okoye alleged that a man simply known as Lion Base appeared to be the mastermind of a postponement of the election.

“He wanted to use his political connection to make himself the caretaker chairman,’’ Okoye alleged.

The chairman pleaded with the governor to use his good offices to see that traders were made to choose the leader they wanted through an election.

A stakeholder Mr Innocent Emenari said there were no provisions for caretaker committee in the association’s constitution.

He added that there were no crises in the market to warrant imposition of a caretaker committee.

Some traders lamented that they had already informed their customers that there would not be sales on the planned election date as the market would be shut down for the event.

Traders carried placards with inscriptions: ‘caretaker committee not in our Constitution’, `Lion base has no shop in Electronics Market’ and `we need election’.

When contacted, Lion Base denied the allegations and declined further comments on the matter.
