Raymond Ozoji, Awka
Dr. Paschal Agbodike, Deputy Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, has observed that despite the sporadic spread of the novel coronavirus pandemic in other parts of the country, Anambra has remained the least state with Covid-19 infections.
Agbodike made the observations in an interview with NewsProbe at the weekend in Awka, the Anambra state capital. He said that in comparative analysis, the state had been able to contain the spread of the dreaded virus unlike what obtained in Lagos state and other parts of the federation.
The Deputy Speaker recalled that the leadership of the 7th state assembly, in its wisdom, set up House of Assembly Special Committee on COVID-19 headed by him. He said the committee was constituted to assist the executive arm of government to disseminate information on COVID-19 prevention in all the 30 constituencies of the state.
Agbodike who also represents Ihiala 2 state constituency, stressed that the committee had been working in conjunction with the Anambra State Action Committee on COVID-19 to sensitise as well as educate the rural populace that coronavirus was real and why it was absolutely imperative that they religiously adhere to the protocols to contain community spread of the viral infection.
He said, ” We have done marvelously well in containing the spread of Covid-19 in Anambra state. All thanks to His Excellency the Executive Governor Chief Willie Obiano for his proactiveness in tackling the pandemic through the ministry of health and the ministry of information. The governor has done very well and the House of Assembly assisted him too.
“We also made a law to assist the state government in the fight against coronavirus. So we have done very well in containing the spread of Covid-19 pandemic in Anambra state. That is why the level of community spread is not much in Anambra state when compared to other states.”
The lawmaker, who pointed out that despite the fact that Anambra has Main-Market Onitsha, which he described as the largest market in West Africa and given the influx of people into the state for commercial activities, said governnent was able to live up to its responsibility of ensuring that the pandemic was curtailed and contained.
Agbodike recounted how he touched the lives of the people of Ihiala 2 state constituency at the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic, and said he provided food palliatives and other essentials for his constituents to alleviate the sufferings and hardships posed to them by the Covid-19 restriction orders promulgated by governnent to save lives.
He however urged his constituents and the entire Anambra citizens to be law-abiding, having known the adverse effects of Covid-19 to the economy of the state and the rest of the world.
He said they should be patient with governnent especially as it concerns other infrastructural development such as road construction, emphasizing that Covid-19 really dealt with the economy of the world but they should be optimistic because he believes that the state economy will recover from the devastations of the coronavirus pandemic.
